What is HSE?
HSE stands for Health, Safety, and Environment. Managing risk is crucial to prevent injuries, illness and damage. This is especially relevant for us as our team have to regularly work on construction sites. Key elements include providing the necessary information, training and equipment. Plus we know how important it is to make sure the right people are appointed and there is communication to promote safety and welfare.
However, it is not solely about our workforce. Management of resources, process optimisation and the promotion of sustainable practices all contribute to lessening our environmental impact.
PPC – People, Planet and Community
Normally within construction, PPC stands for Personal Protective Clothing, however here we are using the acronym to highlight elements of our HSE focus. People, Planet and Community.
We continue to keep all our People safe, with over 200K worked hours every year for the last 5 years, without incident for all our employees. To ensure we are aligned with the latest directives our HSE Manager keeps us up to date with our accreditations e.g. we recently renewed our accreditation for the CQMS Safety Scheme Portal under the SSIP with additional compliance modules.
We continue to make strides in our efforts to look after the Planet by measuring our carbon emissions every year and working on strategies to reduce these emissions to net zero. These activities include optimising deliveries and internal processes to reduce logistical impact; increasing use of renewable energy with EV cars and employee charging points; using location software to make our service visits more efficient, and engaging with external organisations to help us offset our emissions.
As part of our sustainability efforts we look to support, promote and contribute to our Community through various activities. We maintain continuous engagement with local young people. We do this by offering work experience opportunities for students at local schools and running an apprenticeship program. This helps us find new talent to bring into the AV industry. We also support local and UK-wide charities and none-profit organisations like Together for Cinema who deliver cinemas for hospices.
The Result
Smartcomm continues to maintain its excellent HSE record. Our latest figures show we continue to have a zero injury record for all employees for the last 5 years. We have not lost time through injury or had to file any RIDDORs (i.e. the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations). We have achieved our ISO 14001 Environmental Management accreditation.
