BYOD Policy

What is BYOD Policy?

BYOD stands for bring your own device. When companies adopt a BYOD policy, they allow staff to use their own devices within the office environment.

Benefits of a BYOD Policy

There are many benefits of having a BYOD policy, these include:

  • Improved productivity. Not only are employees more comfortable and proficient with their own devices, they don’t need training on them. Staff do not have to manage two devices – all the software, mailboxes, data etc. is in the same place – making it easier to manage.
  • Decreases Operating Costs. A study conducted in 2022 found a reduction of up to 14% in operating costs over 2 years for SMBs adopting BYOD. Cost saving include reduced purchase and data plan expenses.
  • Increase in Employee Satisfaction. BYOD better supports hybrid working and employee engagement. Staff also feel they have greater control over when and where they work.
  • Collaboration gains. Employees are more likely to meet, when they can rock up and use their own device as opposed to a meeting room pc.
  • Efficiency. With BYOD, employees have more freedom to choose a device or customise it to help them do their work more effectively.

Things to consider

It is important, when adopting a BYOD policy, to include things such as:

  • BYOD compatible meeting rooms. The AV needs to connect seamlessly to the meeting participants’ tablet or laptop via solutions like Barco’s Clickshare. This allows meeting participants to connect and share content once the host has launched the meeting using removable dongles. For more information about BYOD meeting rooms, you can read our article here.
  • Integration. There should be well-integrated cloud solutions to facilitate collaboration, communication and information across departments.
  • Protection. Ensure adherence to enterprise security needs and empower the IT Department with the right tools. Ensure multiple layers of security protect the company, BYOD devices and limit  potential damage.
  • Education. The workforce must be educated accordingly. Establishing simple, automated workflows make it simple for staff to enrol their devices and request approvals for new apps and solutions. Understanding the equipment makes sure it is used correctly.
  • Tracking. Track usage and restrict data consumption and information access based on organisational security to ensure people have access to the information they need, but not necessarily all data available.
